Minimalist Makeup: 8 Products in 5 Minutes

Minimalist Makeup: 8 Products in 5 Minutes

When it comes to makeup, I’ve always been in the “less is more” party. I will never forget how nervous I was to get my makeup done for our wedding. I told the makeup artist that I wanted a really natural look, but 45 minutes, a set of false lashes, and some pink eyeshadow later, I was way out of my comfort zone. What she created was beautiful, but it didn’t feel like me. Thankfully she was intuitive and could tell I was a little freaked out, so she graciously started over. The second round she achieved a look that made me feel pretty and natural—just what I wanted.

All of that to say, I want to look polished and natural in my day-to-day, and I want to be able to do it in 5 minutes or less. If you’re like me and want an easy routine, then here are the 8 products I use every morning for a pretty, minimalist look.

Natural Everyday Makeup in 5 Minutes

1. Foundation

During the summer, I never wear foundation, but as soon as my tan fades, I have to bring it back out again. I have sensitive skin, so it’s hard to find a foundation that won't make me breakout. I’ve been using Beautycounter’s Tint Skin Hydrating Foundation since October, and I haven’t had any issues at all. I wear the color Linen, and it blends perfectly. It’s not a heavy-duty full-coverage kind of foundation, so if that’s what you’re wanting, this isn’t it. However, if you want to even your skin tone and cover any basic redness, this is perfect.

I apply a thin layer with the tips of my fingers.

2. Concealer

Next I lightly tap a little concealer under my eyes with the tip of my ring finger and then I cover any blemishes or scarring I may have. Lately my skin has been a lot healthier, so I mostly just need it to cover darkness under my eyes.

I really love Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer. I wear this all year, including during the summer when I’m not wearing foundation, and it looks so natural. I wear the color Creme Brulee.

I did recently try Beautycounter’s Touchup Skin Concealer Pen, and it was a miss for me. The tone was way too orange on my skin. Fortunately, Beautycounter will allow you to return any product that you’re not satisfied with, so I will be sending it back this week.

3. Translucent Powder

I then like to set my foundation and concealer with a translucent powder. Tarte Smooth Operator Amazonian Clay Finishing Setting Powder is the one I have used for a few years now, and it’s still a favorite. It sets my makeup without making me look like Marie Antoinette.

4. Brow Gel

My brows sometimes have a mind of their own, so I like to brush them up with Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear Brow Gel. I always wear this—if I have less than 5 minutes to do my makeup, I always put at least this and some mascara on before I leave the house.

Oh, and if you have sparse brows or patches that need filled in, try applying this castor oil to your brows at night before you go to bed. I had this weird spot on my left brow that completely filled in after using this on it for a couple weeks.

5. Cheeks

I like a healthy flush, so I’ve always gravitated toward a bright pink blush. I have started using Beautycounter’s Satin Powder Blush in the color Guava, and I really like it. It’s super pigmented, so I little goes a long way (which also means it should last me forever).

I dab a little on the apples of my cheeks and then do sweeping motions up along my cheekbones.

6. Luminizer

This is a step I started incorporating last year, and it makes me feel pretty and glowy. I really like RMS Beauty Living Luminizer.

I put a little on the tip of my finger and tap it along the top of my cheekbones, temples, brow bone, corners of my eyes, down the bridge of my nose, and at the cupid’s bow of my lip.

7. Mascara

Mascara is a non-negotiable; even on days when I don’t have 5 minutes to put on makeup, I always at least put on mascara or else my eyelids look bald (blonde girl problems). Drugstore mascara will always be my first choice because mascara dries out so quickly—I can’t stomach paying more than $10 a tube. I have really been liking L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise in Black. It doesn’t flake and it doesn’t melt onto my concealer under my eyes, which is a big issue I’ve had with other mascaras—nothing worse than going half the day at work before looking into a mirror and realizing you look like a member of KISS.

8. Lips

I’ve been solely wearing Beautycounter’s Sheer Lipstick lately because it feels just like lip balm. I alternate between Petal and Poppy. I love them both!

And that’s it! A super simple makeup routine that takes less than 5 minutes.

Oh! And before I go, I wanted to let you know that Beautycounter is having a 20% off flash sale this weekend on some of their holiday favorites. One of the items in the sale is their Color Intense Lipstick Duo, which I am definitely ordering next. This line of lipstick is supposed to be long-wearing, and the shades Sunset and Boardwalk in this set look super flattering.

There are several other fun items in the sale, so definitely check it out! You still have time to get orders in for Christmas gifts.

I’ll be back next weekend with a continuation of the “How to Build a Wardrobe” post. Until then, I’d love to know: What are your makeup musts?
